Orion was  chained outside in North Carolina. He had no food, water, or shelter, and his collar was physically embedded in his flesh. Animal Control came three times to warn the owner and after no change in his living conditions, they took Orion to the shelter.  In addition to the embedded collar, he had worms, heartworm, an ear infection, bloodshot eyes, and was about ten pounds underweight.  PLP grabbed him and took him to the vet. Orion has now completed his initial round of Heartworm treatment, has gained weight, is neutered, and up to date on all vaccines and preventatives.

Orion gets along with all dogs, big an small.  Once, when a small dog started barking and nipping at him, he just calmly put his paw on the little dog and gently held him down. No aggressive reaction at all. He has not been around any cats. He is wonderful with people, including children. However, squirrels are met with extreme interest and much suspicion. He is determined to unravel their conspiracy. Orion likes to move socks and slippers and other small objects around the house, but doesn’t actually chew them, just rearranges them.                                                        He is very flexible and can practically fold himself in half like a little wiener dog.                                                    Orion likes to rest his big ol’ head – on window ledges, on chair seats, on your arm while you’re driving-just about anywhere. He is a furious eater, and  eats every meal as if it is his first and last.  When he’s asleep, he is OUT. He snores away and you could probably drag him around on the floor with one paw and he wouldn’t bat an eye. Then again, you could likely do that while he’s awake and he still wouldn’t bat an eye.   He is truly a gentle giant!   He is quiet and easy going.  He rides great in the car and is very relaxed but he very eager to be the first one in AND out. Orion walks well on the leash but will pull a bit if he sees a squirrel!  He is housebroken and is fine at night or when left home alone out of his crate. He sleeps through the night.                                                                                                               Orion has a lovely deep bark that he will show off when people or animals come near his sunroom window – but he is not a yippy, senseless barker.   Orion is currently walked                                                           once a day for a little under an hour.   Sometimes he’s interested in fetching balls – other times not so much. He does not need a lot of exercise and would be perfectly content sleeping the day away.   If not in a fenced area, he should be on a leash because he is on high alert 95% of the time and shows intense interest in all people and animals. He would not be able to resist going to investigate anything within his vision.
