Let us officially introduce Mr. Oscar to Peace, Love, & Paws, Inc.

Oscar came to us after his mom became ill and unable to care for him. He went to a family member who was going to take him and his brother to a shelter. (Most every shelter is full and not able to take more dogs in currently.)

Oscar is eight years old according to his former family and he weighs in at 11 lbs. As far as we can tell, he appears to be a pure-bred mini dachshund ... and he has a dachshund attitude to go with that theory. ;)

Oscar, like many dachshunds, loves to play and can be obsessed with toys. He loves his pig squeak toy and will play fetch with you for hours. He is an active pup and loves to run and play and go for walks. He does very well on a leash and loves car rides.

Oscar is a strong-willed little dog and does bark a lot. He will try to be the boss or be in charge so that is something to consider. It would be best to slowly introduce him to other dogs and may be best to be around older or submissive dogs. Once he gets to know everyone, dogs and people, he will relax and be content, but you will need to give him some rules.

While we do require all dogs to be crate trained while with PLP for their safety and decompression, Oscar is not a fan and will bark if he can't see his person :) We doubt he was ever crated before. Because he was not neutered when he came to us, he was marking in the first foster home occasionally.  That should subside in a few weeks if it hasn't already, but again, something to watch as male dachshunds can be stubborn. ;)

Like many wiener dogs, Oscar likes to nap under the covers with his person and, once settled and acclimated, other dogs too. He does love treats; just remember dachshunds need to stay at a healthy weight or they can hurt their backs which can lead to expensive surgeries. It is best to have doggy stairs so these little low riders can get up and down from beds and couches without jumping. IVDD surgery is very expensive. (Intervertebral disc disease- dachshunds are prone to this with their long spines)

Oscar had not been to the vet in many years when he joined us. He was not neutered, nor up to date. He was cryptorchid meaning one of his testicles had not dropped so the surgery was a bit more extensive and costly. He also had a dental and several teeth removed. He received all vaccinations, snap test, and fecal. He is heartworm negative and received a 6-month Proheart injection. (heartworm preventative). He is current on flea and tick preventative (simparica) and is microchipped.

Oscar will need a patient, loving home who will give him time to settle in. While he is doing fine with the other dogs in his foster home, he would be fine as an only dog who gets all the attention. He would prefer someone who is not gone for extremely long periods of time as this is something he has had to adjust to. A few hours of course are fine. He sleeps in the crate now when his foster mom is gone.

Oscar was very scared and sad when he came to PLP.   He does have a bite history as a new foster surprised him when she went to pick him up from behind while he was barking at the door. He also did not like being picked up to get in and out of the car so someone who adopts may need to keep this in mind. He just needs a little time to trust. Because of this, we will only place Oscar in a home with no kids. He has not been around cats.

Oscar is located in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Approved application, home visit, and pet restrictions will be checked. Oscar is a small dog and can fit thru some fencing, so this will be checked at any home visit as well.

As all vetting as gone up along with food and supplies, our adoption donations had to be increased as well. Adoption donation of $325.00.

We are a 501c3 nonprofit organization and receive zero public funding.
